Chemist Warehouse

commercetoolsConvert Digital

An 18-month discovery and architecture programme with a commercetools rebuild.

About the project

I co-led an 18-month discovery and architecture programme for Chemist Warehouse with another key contributor at Convert Digital. We ran dozens of workshops with the Chemist Warehouse team, comparing Shopify and commercetools and working through the technology choices for the new platform. I led the technology vendor selection and was a key stakeholder throughout the project.

The work started with understanding the existing business and its legacy systems, including on-premises servers. We planned the move to commercetools using a strangler approach: progressively replacing parts of the old platform while the business continued to operate.

I was also the lead frontend engineer in Next.js, building the login, store, cart and checkout experiences. I designed the Contentful microcopy integration so the team could manage interface wording and other CMS content across the customer experience.

The wider platform was delivered by the Convert Digital and Chemist Warehouse teams, bringing together the storefront, a bespoke checkout and pharmacy-specific prescription workflows.

This is one of the projects I’m proudest to have worked on at Convert Digital. There’s more beyond this selection — explore the team’s wider work.
